PM Narendra Modi Arrives in Poland for Historic Visit, First by Indian Prime Minister in 45 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Warsaw, Poland, on Wednesday evening, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the European nation in 45 years. The last Indian prime minister to visit Poland was Morarji Desai in 1978.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome upon his arrival at Warsaw’s airport. On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he expressed enthusiasm about the visit, stating, “Landed in Poland. Looking forward to the various programmes here. This visit will add momentum to the India-Poland friendship and benefit the people of our nations.”

During his stay, PM Modi is scheduled to engage in several significant activities. He will meet with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda. The visit also includes interactions with the Indian diaspora and visits to various historical sites, such as the Jam Saheb of Nawanagr memorial, the monument to the Battle of Monte Cassino, and the Kolhapur Memorial.

In a statement prior to his departure, PM Modi highlighted Poland as a key economic partner for India in Central Europe, emphasizing the shared commitment to democracy and pluralism that strengthens their bilateral relationship. He noted, “Our mutual commitment to democracy and pluralism further reinforces our relationship. I look forward to meeting my friend Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda to further advance our partnership.”

Following his visit to Poland, PM Modi will travel to Kyiv, Ukraine, on Friday. This upcoming visit will be the first by an Indian prime minister to the war-torn country. PM Modi’s trip to Kyiv is at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The visit comes amid ongoing criticism of India’s continued oil purchases from Russia and its abstention from voting against Russia in the United Nations.
