Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the inauguration of India’s first private sector aircraft manufacturing facility for military aircraft, a collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus, as a transformative moment in India’s defence and aerospace journey. In a LinkedIn post, Modi called the opening of the C-295 aircraft manufacturing complex in Vadodara a “watershed moment,” highlighting it as a testament to India’s swift progress in defence manufacturing. This project marks the country’s first private sector final assembly line for military aircraft.
The C-295 facility, developed in collaboration with Spanish President Pedro Sanchez, will produce military transport aircraft domestically. “The speed of execution is breathtaking – from foundation stone to operational facility in just two years! This is a clear manifestation of a new work culture and the capabilities of the people of India,” Modi wrote, crediting the rapid establishment of the facility as a milestone achievement.
A Surge in Defence Production and Exports
Modi also underscored India’s strides in defence manufacturing, stating that domestic production has reached ₹1.27 lakh crore, and exports have grown exponentially, from ₹1,000 crore in 2014 to ₹21,000 crore in 2024. In just three years, over 12,300 items have been indigenised, with Defence Public Sector Undertakings investing more than ₹7,500 crore in Indian vendors.
The prime minister highlighted the broad transformation underway in India’s defence ecosystem, with indigenous warships, missiles, and bulletproof jackets now playing a crucial role in India’s defence capabilities. “India is becoming Aatmanirbhar in defence and is also working to be a top defence equipment manufacturer,” Modi remarked, emphasizing the growth of a self-reliant military industry.
Empowering Youth and MSMEs in Defence Manufacturing
Modi lauded the role of India’s young talent, or “Yuva Shakti,” in advancing the defence manufacturing sector. He noted that the defence sector has been generating jobs, promoting skill development, and offering new opportunities for MSMEs. He invited youth, startups, manufacturers, and innovators to take part in India’s defence sector, noting that “the doors are open for innovation, the policies are supportive, and the opportunity is unprecedented.”
He called for collective action in building a stronger, self-reliant India. “This is your moment to be part of history. Together, we will make India not just Aatmanirbhar in defence but a global leader in defence manufacturing,” he urged. Modi closed his statement with a patriotic call to action: “Together, let’s build a stronger, self-reliant Bharat!”
The new Tata-Airbus facility is expected to not only enhance India’s defence capabilities but also serve as a landmark in the country’s journey toward self-reliance in military technology and production.
