A non-local man was found dead in the Waduna area of Zainapora, Shopian district, on Friday, with authorities confirming the incident as a terrorist attack. The victim’s bullet-riddled body was discovered by officials, who have since initiated an investigation to identify him and the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shopian stated that the body has been taken to a hospital for medico-legal formalities as police work diligently to piece together the events leading to the fatal shooting.
This violent incident marks a troubling start for the newly elected government in Jammu and Kashmir, coming just days after Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory following six years of President’s rule. The recent assembly elections, held after a decade-long hiatus, saw the National Conference (NC) and Congress alliance emerge victorious, with the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) securing 42 seats, while Congress won six.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made significant gains, capturing 29 seats, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) managed to secure three. Other parties, including the People’s Conference, CPI(M), and AAP, won one seat each, and seven independent candidates also triumphed in the elections. The three-phase elections, which took place after the abrogation of Article 370, concluded on October 8.
On Thursday, just a day after taking the oath of office, Abdullah convened his first cabinet meeting at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar. Reflecting on the challenges ahead, he stated, “Our administration’s approach will be people-friendly. We have entered the civil secretariat with a positive mindset, focused on delivering the best for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”
