Noida Expressway New Rules: Vehicle Breakdown Could Cost You ₹20,000 Fine

In a bid to curb traffic congestion and ensure smoother vehicular movement, the Noida Traffic Police has introduced stringent new rules targeting commercial vehicles that break down on the Noida Expressway. Under the new regulations, commercial vehicles causing obstructions due to mechanical failures will face fines ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹20,000, with the possibility of vehicle impoundment.

New Fines and Regulations

Lakhan Singh Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), stated that these measures aim to encourage commercial vehicle owners to maintain their vehicles properly, reducing unnecessary traffic snarls. “About 8 to 10 lakh vehicles pass through Noida Expressway daily. Areas like DND Flyover, Chilla Border, and Prerna Stahl are key congestion points,” he told PTI.

Initially, these penalties apply only to commercial vehicles such as buses, trucks, and overloaded transport vehicles. However, officials have confirmed that similar penalties will soon be extended to private vehicles as well.

The fines will be imposed under Section 201 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which deals with penalties for causing obstructions on roads. Over the past week, traffic authorities have seized 22 commercial vehicles and issued challans to 210 others for breakdown-related violations.

Mixed Reactions from Commuters

Local residents have expressed mixed opinions about the new rules. Krishna Kumar Sharma, a Greater Noida resident, supported the move, saying, “It is a good initiative and will help in reducing unnecessary traffic disruptions on the expressway.” However, Anil Kumar Chetiwal raised concerns, arguing, “Vehicles facing emergency issues like flat tyres or technical failures should not be penalized.”

Recent Speed Limit Changes

These rules come just two months after the authorities revised speed limits for vehicles on the Yamuna Expressway and the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.

These revised speed limits will remain in effect until February 15, 2025, particularly covering peak winter months when road conditions tend to worsen.

With Noida’s traffic authorities tightening enforcement, vehicle owners—both commercial and private—will now need to be extra cautious to avoid hefty fines and disruptions while traveling on the expressway.
