A portion of a newly constructed bridge over the Bakra river collapsed in Pararia village of Bihar’s Araria district on Tuesday. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported in the incident, according to police statements.
Videos capturing the collapsed bridge have circulated widely on social media platforms. The bridge served as a vital link between Kursa Kanta and Sikti areas of Araria district and was recently completed by the state government. However, it had not yet been opened for public use as approach roads to the bridge were still under construction.
Amit Ranjan, the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Araria, confirmed the incident and mentioned that officials have been dispatched to the site to assess the situation. “A portion of a newly constructed bridge over Bakra river has collapsed. Officials have reached there to examine the matter,” stated SP Amit Ranjan during an interaction with news agency PTI.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown at this time and is under investigation.
In response to the incident, Sikti MLA Vijay Kumar spoke with news agency ANI and placed blame on the construction company’s owner. He demanded a thorough investigation by the administration into the circumstances leading to the collapse.
This incident follows a similar one earlier this year when an under-construction bridge over the Kosi river collapsed in Supaul district, resulting in one fatality and injuries to ten others.
Netizens expressed their reactions to the bridge collapse in Araria, with many highlighting concerns about the quality of construction and taxpayer money being wasted on such infrastructure failures.
“It happens every year in Bihar. It’s routine work,” commented one user on social media.
“Bihar and bridge collapse is a never-ending story,” remarked another individual, reflecting on past incidents.
“This is absolutely ridiculous quality of construction and a total waste of taxpayers’ money! It needs deep investment in cost and expenditures. Who is going to be responsible for all of this?” posted a third person on the social media platform X.
