Mumbai experienced its coldest November day in eight years on Friday, with the Santacruz observatory recording a minimum temperature of 16.5 degrees Celsius. This marks the lowest temperature for the month of November since 2016, when the same station recorded 16.3°C on November 11.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the temperature was measured between Thursday night and Friday morning, providing an unusual chill for the city. The Santacruz observatory, which tracks weather conditions for Mumbai’s suburbs, reported the significant drop in temperature. In contrast, the Colaba observatory, which covers the island city, recorded a slightly warmer 21.4°C during the same period.
Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD Mumbai, noted that the cold was a rare event for the city in recent years. However, she also reassured residents that there is no cold wave alert for Maharashtra between November 30 and December 3. Nair further mentioned that temperatures are expected to rise in the coming days, bringing some warmth back to the region.
Despite the chilly start to December, the cold snap has been a subject of interest, with residents experiencing an unusually cold stretch for this time of year. As Mumbai gears up for the last days of November, the city is set to see a gradual rise in temperatures as the week progresses.
