The Goa Police have booked Mumbai businessman Abu Farhan Azmi, son of Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi, along with two Goa residents, following a heated altercation in the Candolim area over rash driving on Monday evening.
According to officials, the incident occurred when locals stopped Farhan Azmi, who was driving a luxury SUV, accusing him of reckless driving. Azmi, in response, called the police and reportedly warned the locals that he was carrying a licensed firearm for protection. His son was also present in the vehicle at the time.
The argument escalated, causing a commotion along the main road in Candolim, a popular tourist hub. The police control room in Panaji received a call about the altercation near Newton’s Super Market. Upon arrival, officers attempted to take the driver to the police station, but the locals resisted. Eventually, both parties were taken to Calangute Police Station and given the opportunity to file complaints, which they declined.
Superintendent of Police (North Goa) Akshat Kaushal stated, “Since the individuals were involved in a fight in a public place, disturbing public peace, and causing affray, a state-initiated complaint was filed by Sub-Inspector Paresh Sinari of Calangute Police Station.”
Alongside Farhan Azmi, the police identified the other individuals involved as local residents Zeon Fernandes and Joseph Fernandes. A case has been registered under Section 194 (affray) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which carries a punishment of up to one month in prison and a fine of ₹1,000.
The three individuals have been issued notices to cooperate with the investigation. Meanwhile, police confirmed that Farhan Azmi provided a valid arms license along with permission to carry his firearm during his visit to Goa.
