Vasantrao Chavan, a distinguished Member of Parliament for the Indian National Congress, has passed away at the age of 70. The veteran politician died early Monday morning at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad, Telangana, where he had been receiving treatment for deteriorating health.
Chavan’s demise marks the end of a significant chapter in Maharashtra’s political landscape. He had recently emerged as a symbol of Congress’ resurgence in the state after securing a remarkable victory in the Nanded Lok Sabha seat during the recent elections. Despite facing a strong challenge from the BJP’s sitting MP Pratap Chikhlikar—who was backed by Ashok Chavan—Vasantrao Chavan managed to clinch victory with a substantial margin of 59,442 votes. His triumph was attributed to his ability to galvanize loyal Congress workers and address the concerns of the Maratha community, which had been vocal about the lack of action on Maratha reservation issues during Ashok Chavan’s tenure.

Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole expressed his grief on social media platform X, stating, “The news of the demise of a senior leader and Nanded MP Vasantraoji Chavan is shocking. Even in adverse conditions, he always remained loyal to the Congress party and brought the idea of the party to every home. The entire Congress party is with the Chavan family in this period of grief.”
Leader of the Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar and other prominent political figures have also conveyed their condolences, acknowledging Chavan’s contributions and his role in revitalizing the Congress party in Maharashtra.
