Actor-turned-politician Mimi Chakraborty has made headlines by announcing her resignation from her Member of Parliament (MP) post on Thursday. However, her resignation is pending acceptance by Trinamool supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Chakraborty, after meeting with Banerjee, confirmed her resignation but clarified that it has yet to be accepted. “I have definitely resigned, but my resignation hasn’t been accepted. I have coordinated with the CM, and she assured me that she will take care of everything,” stated Chakraborty.
Expressing her discontent with politics, Chakraborty emphasized that it is not her calling. She highlighted the challenges of being a politician while also being an actor, stating, “Politics is not for me. You have to promote someone here (in politics) if you are helping someone…Besides being a politician, I also work as an actor. I have equal responsibilities. If you join politics, you are criticized whether you work or not.”
Chakraborty’s decision reportedly stems from dissatisfaction with the party’s local leadership, prompting her resignation from the MP post representing the Jadavpur constituency in West Bengal.
The resignation comes amidst Chakraborty’s recent departure from membership in two standing committees of parliament and her relinquishment of the chairperson post in two Rogi Kalyan Samitis (hospital management committees).
This development unfolds months ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and during a tumultuous period for the Trinamool Congress, with ongoing protests in Sandeshkhali against allegations of sexual harassment by Trinamool leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates.
As Chakraborty’s resignation awaits acceptance and political dynamics evolve in West Bengal, the implications of her departure and its impact on the political landscape remain subjects of speculation and analysis.
