In a strategic move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has selected Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate for the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat, traditionally held by the Congress. Singh, a seasoned politician with a history of affiliations across various parties, will contend against former Congress President Rahul Gandhi in what promises to be a closely watched electoral battle.
Dinesh Pratap Singh, born on October 3, 1967, hails from Gunawar Kamangalpur village in Rae Bareli district. He completed his education at Feroze Gandhi Degree College, Raebareli, in 1986. Singh’s political journey began in 2004 with the Samajwadi Party before moving to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and then joining the Congress in 2010. However, his stint with the Congress was marred by allegations of misconduct, resulting in his suspension in 2017.
Singh’s entry into the BJP in 2018 marked a significant shift, culminating in his candidacy against Sonia Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Although he faced defeat then, Singh regained political ground, securing a seat as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) with BJP’s backing in 2022.
His nomination as the BJP candidate for Raebareli underscores the party’s strategy to challenge the Congress stronghold in the region. Singh’s past electoral performance and his roots in the Thakur community are seen as assets in this electoral contest.
The upcoming election will not only be a faceoff between political heavyweights but also a test of Singh’s ability to sway voters in a constituency long associated with the Gandhi family. His statement that “which Gandhi comes to Raebareli, they will lose” reflects the confidence he brings to the electoral arena.
