Manipur Imposes Night Curfew Along Bangladesh Border Amid Bangladesh Protests

In response to the ongoing law and order situation in Bangladesh, the Manipur government has imposed a night curfew in the districts of Pherzawl and Jiribam. The curfew, effective from Tuesday evening, is a precautionary measure aimed at managing the potential influx of people from the violence-stricken neighboring country.

The decision follows a directive from the Home Department’s Joint Secretary, who highlighted the possibility of an influx of individuals from Bangladesh due to the current unrest there. The order emphasizes the need for strict vigilance and additional security measures to prevent illegal migration. The Deputy Commissioners of the affected districts have been tasked with enforcing the night curfew and ensuring robust surveillance by local police and security forces along the borders.

Although Manipur itself does not share a border with Bangladesh, it is adjacent to Assam, which has extensive borders with Bangladesh. The night curfew in Manipur is part of a broader security strategy that also involves heightened monitoring along the borders.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya, which shares a 445 km border with Bangladesh, implemented its own night curfew on Monday. Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong confirmed that the curfew would cover areas up to 200 meters from the zero line to control cross-border movement. The Border Security Force (BSF) has been instructed to maintain stringent vigilance along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya.

These measures reflect the heightened security concerns in the region as both states prepare to manage the potential impact of the unrest in Bangladesh on local security and migration patterns.
