The mutilated body of a 45-year-old man, who was killed by a crocodile in the Chambal River, was recovered after a 22-hour search operation, officials confirmed on Monday. The tragic incident occurred near Harpura village in Etawah on Saturday night when the victim, identified as Ramveer Nishad, was watering his cattle by the river.
According to Chakarnagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Brahmanand Katheria, Ramveer, a resident of Harpura village under Bhareh police station limits, was attacked by the crocodile while performing his routine task near the riverbank. Despite Ramveer’s desperate cries for help and his attempts to resist, the powerful reptile dragged him into the deep waters before villagers could intervene.
The villagers immediately alerted the police, and a search operation was launched with the assistance of the Chambal sanctuary department’s specialized team. SDM Katheria, along with Bhitholi police station in-charge, oversaw the operation, which lasted nearly 22 hours before the body was recovered on Sunday.
“The body was found after an extensive search of the river. We express our condolences to the grieving family,” said SDM Katheria.
The body was sent for a post-mortem examination, and the authorities are conducting further inquiries into the incident. SDM Katheria also announced financial assistance to the bereaved family to support them during this difficult time.
The Chambal River, known for its rich biodiversity, is home to a significant population of crocodiles. Such incidents, although rare, have raised concerns about the safety of those living along the riverbanks.
Local authorities are now looking into preventive measures to avoid such attacks in the future and ensure the safety of residents in the region.
