West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led government, condemning the suspension of opposition MPs from Parliament as a “mockery of democracy.” Banerjee accused the BJP of suppressing the voice of the people and expressed concerns about the democratic process.
The suspension of 78 opposition members, including representatives from the Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), DMK, and JD(U), from both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha was described by Banerjee as an act of fear by the ruling party. The suspension was a result of unruly behavior, displaying placards, and protesting over the Parliament security breach issue. This move follows the earlier suspension of 14 MPs during the ongoing Winter session of Parliament.
Banerjee criticized the BJP’s apparent arrogance following recent wins in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, questioning the motive behind suspending numerous MPs, including senior leaders. She highlighted the suspension of TMC’s Sougata Ray, labeling it as a move undermining the sanctity of the House.
The Chief Minister emphasized the significance of a democratic Parliament, questioning the need for the government to hastily pass three crucial bills that seek to replace colonial-era criminal laws just months before the Lok Sabha elections.
In response to the expulsion of TMC MP Mahua Moitra in the “bribe-for-query” case, Banerjee condemned the lack of opportunity for Moitra to defend herself, labeling it unfortunate.
Banerjee also raised concerns about the December 13 Parliament security breach, questioning the absence of action against the BJP MP who facilitated entry for at least one individual into the Lok Sabha chamber. Opposition parties have criticized the discrepancies, highlighting the lack of action against BJP MP Prathap Simha, who aided individuals carrying smoke cannisters, while their own members faced suspension for raising the issue.
The Chief Minister’s strong criticism underscores the growing tensions within Parliament and the broader concern over the stifling of opposition voices, portraying a challenge to the essence of democratic values and practices.
