The aftermath of derogatory comments by three Maldivian ministers aimed at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led to a diplomatic rift, prompting strong reactions from Indian officials and the public.
Lakshadweep administrator Praful Patel addressed the disparaging remarks made by the Maldivian ministers, describing their comments as a challenge to India’s dignity. In an interview with NDTV, Patel emphasized India’s stance, stating that such insults wouldn’t be tolerated. He expressed gratitude for the widespread support from Indians, highlighting the collective response to the incident, which he deemed a fitting reply to Maldives’ ministers.
The suspension of Maldivian ministers Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid by the Maldivian government followed their controversial remarks against PM Modi after his visit to the union territory. This triggered a social media outcry with hashtags like ‘boycott Maldives’ gaining traction. EaseMyTrip also canceled all flight bookings to the Maldives in solidarity with India.
The Maldivian government’s action came after New Delhi expressed strong disapproval, distancing itself from the ministers’ remarks, labeling them as personal opinions. Subsequently, the Maldivian High Commissioner Ibrahim Shaheeb was summoned by India’s Ministry of External Affairs. Shaheeb was urged to address the strained bilateral relationship, insisting that the dismissal, rather than just suspension, of the three ministers would pave the way for reconciliation.
Amidst this diplomatic tussle, Patel highlighted global interest in visiting Lakshadweep, foreseeing economic opportunities and tourism development for the region. He noted ongoing initiatives to bolster tourism infrastructure and anticipated the establishment of a larger airport to cater to increased interest following PM Modi’s recent visit.
Patel emphasized the need for Lakshadweep’s comprehensive development, underscoring its newfound global attention post-Modi’s visit, signaling potential growth opportunities for the islands.
The incident underscores the delicate nature of diplomatic relations in the region, necessitating resolution and cooperation between India and the Maldives amid escalating tensions arising from provocative remarks.
