Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk Cancels Border March Amid Restrictions

Activist Sonam Wangchuk has decided to cancel his proposed border march to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) following restrictions imposed by the Ladakh administration, including Section 144 and internet curbs in the region.

The Ladakh administration’s decision to disallow the march and impose restrictions led to Wangchuk’s decision, who intended to highlight China’s land grab since 2020 in the Chungathung border area.

Wangchuk, advocating for Ladakh’s statehood and 6th Schedule status, expressed concerns about the government’s response, fearing an “overreaction” that could lead to clashes and unrest. He cautioned against potential attempts to disrupt peaceful protests and use any resulting violence as an excuse to curtail demonstrations in Ladakh.

The activist criticized the government’s control measures, referring to them as “madness” and highlighting their potential impact on national security and regional peace. Despite withdrawing the march, Wangchuk stated that their objective to raise awareness about Ladakh’s situation and border issues has been achieved.

Earlier, Wangchuk had warned that any government attempt to halt the march would indicate a desire to conceal the extent of China’s land acquisition in Ladakh. He emphasized that the primary goal was to inform the nation about developments in Ladakh and the challenges faced along the border.

While the border march may not proceed as planned, Wangchuk’s efforts have brought attention to Ladakh’s concerns and the need for greater transparency regarding border issues and territorial integrity.
