Kolkata, April 29, 2025 — A devastating incident occurred at a hotel in north Kolkata on Tuesday night when a staff member tragically died after jumping from the building during a fire emergency. The fire broke out around 9 PM at a five-storey hotel near Mechua Bazar, an area known for its bustling wholesale market that caters primarily to traders from out of town.

According to fire department officials, the fire quickly spread across the ground and first floors, triggering a massive response from the fire department. Six fire tenders were dispatched to contain the blaze. As thick smoke filled the building, several hotel guests and employees sought refuge on the roof and upper-floor balconies to escape the suffocating fumes.

In the midst of the panic, one of the hotel staff members, identified as 42-year-old Manoj Paswan, jumped from the building. Despite the rapid efforts of fire personnel to rescue those trapped on the balconies, Paswan’s jump resulted in fatal injuries. Paswan, a long-time employee of the hotel, had worked there for nearly two decades. Originally from Jharkhand, he was well-known to his colleagues and the hotel’s regular clientele.
