Kerala Woman Dies After Alleged Medical Negligence; Family Accuses Doctor of Administering Wrong Injection

A 28-year-old woman, Krishna Thankappan, from Malayinkeezhu, has died at the Government Medical College Hospital here following an incident of alleged medical negligence. The woman had fallen unconscious five days earlier after reportedly being given a wrong injection at Neyyattinkara General Hospital.

According to family sources, Thankappan sought treatment for kidney stones at Neyyattinkara General Hospital where she was administered an injection by Dr. Vinu. The family claims that the injection was inappropriate and that Dr. Vinu failed to conduct an allergy test, despite Thankappan having a known allergy history.

Following the incident, Thankappan’s condition worsened, and she was subsequently transferred to the Government Medical College Hospital. Her family has accused Dr. Vinu of medical negligence, leading to unconsciousness that lasted five days. They have filed a complaint with the Neyyattinkara police, who registered a case under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita (BNS), which addresses acts endangering life or personal safety.

The Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) has disputed the family’s allegations. In a statement, the association contended that the injection administered was standard for abdominal issues and suggested that anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, might have been responsible for the woman’s condition. They rejected the claim of treatment negligence.
