Free WiFi Now Available for Kedarnath Pilgrims

Pilgrims visiting the Kedarnath temple can now enjoy free, high-speed WiFi access, a service that became operational on Saturday following successful trials. The initiative aims to enhance the experience of those visiting the sacred Himalayan temple, providing them with a seamless internet connection during their pilgrimage.

To access the WiFi, pilgrims will need to register their mobile numbers and generate a one-time password (OTP), according to Chief Development Officer (Rudraprayag) GS Khati. Each user will be allowed to use the facility for 30 minutes, giving them the opportunity to stay connected with family or access important information during their visit.

This WiFi facility is part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and amenities for Char Dham pilgrims, who travel to Kedarnath as part of the revered pilgrimage circuit in Uttarakhand. Authorities have been focused on enhancing communication and providing better services to ensure safety and convenience for visitors.

The introduction of the free WiFi comes as part of the district’s larger technological improvements. The Rudraprayag district, where the Kedarnath temple is located, has implemented its own wireless intranet system — the District Disaster Resource Network. This advanced system is designed to function continuously even during natural disasters or emergencies, which are common in the region.

Khati explained that the network offers mobile data, voice calling, and high-quality CCTV capabilities. It has been instrumental during past disasters, such as the July 2024 Kedarnath trek route disaster, when other mobile networks were down. The local wireless intranet network proved to be a lifeline, enabling stranded pilgrims, laborers, and rescue teams to stay connected with their families and coordinate relief efforts.

The new WiFi facility at Kedarnath is expected to further strengthen the communication infrastructure in the region, ensuring that pilgrims have access to the internet while also contributing to the safety and effectiveness of rescue operations during emergencies.

With these developments, authorities are hopeful that Kedarnath and the surrounding Char Dham sites will continue to be more accessible and safer for the growing number of pilgrims each year.
