The recent spell of heavy rain in Jammu and Kashmir has led to significant natural disasters, including landslides and an avalanche, prompting authorities to take safety measures to protect lives and property.
Several parts of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed landslides caused by the heavy rain, with a dramatic video capturing a hillside house crumbling down after being hit by a landslide in Uri near the Line of Control. Additionally, an avalanche struck the Sonmarg area amid heavy rain and snowfall, prompting people and livestock to rush to safety.
The adverse weather conditions have affected transportation routes, notably the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway due to multiple landslides triggered by the rain. This highway, crucial for connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country, faced blockages at several points, disrupting travel and logistics.
The Mughal road, an alternative route linking Poonch and Rajouri districts with south Kashmir’s Shopian district, remained closed due to snowfall in Peer Ki Gali and surrounding areas. This closure has added to the challenges of connectivity and accessibility in the region.
The heavy rain has led to increased water levels in rivers, lakes, and streams across Kashmir. The Meteorological (MeT) office has issued alerts, stating that similar weather conditions are expected to persist for the next 24 hours, necessitating continued vigilance and preparedness.
In response to the heightened risk of inundation and landslides, authorities have taken preventive measures such as closing several schools in vulnerable areas. This step aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the challenging weather conditions.
As Jammu and Kashmir grapples with the aftermath of heavy rain, the focus remains on mitigating the impact of landslides, avalanches, and waterlogging. Collaboration between government agencies, local authorities, and communities is crucial in managing the situation and ensuring the well-being of residents during this challenging period.
