Justin Trudeau Addresses India-Canada Relations Amid Assassination Plot Accusations

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada reflected on the evolving dynamics between India and Canada, acknowledging a potential shift in tone following the indictment of an Indian national in the US for allegedly plotting an assassination attempt on a Khalistani terrorist on American soil.

Trudeau highlighted a perceptible change in India’s approach, suggesting a newfound openness to collaboration rather than resorting to confrontational rhetoric. “There’s an understanding that maybe, maybe just churning out attacks against Canada isn’t going to make this problem go away,” Trudeau remarked during an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Emphasizing Canada’s stance on defending rights, safety, and the rule of law, Trudeau clarified, “We don’t want to be in a situation of having a fight with India right now over this. We want to be working on that trade deal. We want to be advancing the Indo-Pacific strategy.”

The strain in India-Canada ties stemmed from Trudeau’s September allegations regarding the potential involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. India dismissed these allegations as baseless and driven by ulterior motives.

Further complicating matters, US federal prosecutors later charged Nikhil Gupta, allegedly collaborating with an Indian government employee, in a foiled plot targeting a Sikh separatist with dual US-Canadian citizenship. While the separatist leader wasn’t explicitly named, media identified him as Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, associated with the Sikhs for Justice organization, banned in India.

India responded by forming a probe committee to investigate the allegations but noted Canada hadn’t shared specific evidence. In response to Trudeau’s claims, India temporarily suspended visa issuance for Canadians and requested Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in India to maintain parity. Visa services resumed last month after a temporary suspension.

Trudeau acknowledged that his public allegations aimed to deter similar actions, reflecting his intent to discourage future confrontations. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had earlier highlighted the absence of evidence shared by Canada with India regarding the alleged involvement of Indian agents in the case.

The evolving situation underscores the complexity of diplomatic relations amid sensitive allegations, as both nations navigate the aftermath of these contentious accusations while endeavoring to preserve bilateral ties and explore opportunities for collaboration.
