Jharkhand witnessed a significant crackdown on illegal activities as authorities seized a staggering ₹110 crore in cash, liquor, drugs, and other items in the lead-up to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This marked a record-breaking enforcement effort in the state, according to officials.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) played a crucial role in this operation, recovering approximately ₹35 crore during raids at various locations. These raids included the premises of a domestic help linked to a secretary of Jharkhand minister Alamgir Alam.
Jharkhand’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), K Ravi Kumar, highlighted the unprecedented nature of this seizure, stating, “This is the highest seizure amount so far in Jharkhand. In 2019, the cash recovery was only ₹5 crore.” The enforcement action comes in the wake of the Model Code of Conduct being in effect for the Lok Sabha polls.
The recovered amount includes cash, drugs, liquor, and assorted items, all contributing to the substantial haul. With the general elections scheduled to commence in four phases in Jharkhand starting May 13, authorities are intensifying efforts to curb illicit activities and ensure fair and transparent elections.
