External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar responded robustly to accusations of India being a “bully” in the sub-continent and the Indian Ocean region, emphasizing India’s substantial aid and support to neighboring countries. His comments came during a book launch event in the national capital where he addressed concerns regarding India’s regional relations.
In response to questions regarding India’s perceived role as a “bully,” Jaishankar highlighted India’s significant contributions to the welfare of its neighbors, particularly amidst times of distress. He noted that “big bullies don’t provide four and a half billion dollars” in aid, nor do they supply vaccines or make exceptions to their own rules to meet urgent demands. These remarks were seen as a veiled response to recent comments from Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, who raised concerns about bullying.
Jaishankar underscored the efforts undertaken by India to enhance connectivity and cooperation with neighboring nations, emphasizing the positive strides made in trade, investments, and travel. He pointed out the notable improvements in infrastructure and connectivity projects, such as power grids, roads, railways, and waterways, which have bolstered regional integration and economic development.
Highlighting the evolving dynamics between India and its neighbors, Jaishankar cited examples of strengthened partnerships with countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Maldives. He emphasized the constructive engagement and collaborative initiatives aimed at fostering mutual growth and prosperity.
The External Affairs Minister also acknowledged the transformative impact of Indian investments and infrastructure projects in neighboring countries, particularly in Bangladesh and Nepal, where significant developments in transportation and trade infrastructure have occurred over the past decade.
In conclusion, Jaishankar emphasized the positive trajectory of India’s relations with its neighbors, emphasizing the tangible benefits derived from enhanced connectivity and cooperation. Despite challenges and occasional misunderstandings, India remains committed to fostering strong and mutually beneficial partnerships with its neighbors, grounded in principles of respect, cooperation, and shared prosperity.
