In a dramatic escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, a massive blackout was enforced across Jaisalmer and other western Rajasthan districts bordering Pakistan on Thursday night, following an attempted drone attack by Pakistan.
Around 8:30 PM, the residents of Jaisalmer were startled by the sounds of massive explosions. The explosions continued intermittently for nearly an hour, sparking panic among the locals. As the night deepened, a blackout was imposed in the area, plunging the stretch of western Rajasthan into complete darkness. Police officials confirmed the explosions and stated that security forces were immediately mobilized to respond to the situation.
In Barmer, another district bordering Pakistan, the sirens blared multiple times, further heightening the anxiety. Police personnel quickly began patrolling the streets to maintain order, while people scrambled to find safety. Authorities have assured residents that the situation is under control, though the exact nature and target of the drone attack remain under investigation.
The blackout and subsequent emergency measures come amid a period of heightened tensions following India’s retaliatory strikes against Pakistan earlier this week. Indian armed forces had carried out precision strikes on terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Wednesday, as a response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians on April 22.
Security forces in the region remain on high alert, and additional reinforcements have been deployed along the India-Pakistan border. A spokesperson for the Border Security Force (BSF) confirmed that all possible measures are being taken to ensure the safety and security of civilians.
This recent flare-up follows a pattern of cross-border hostilities, with both countries engaging in military action in response to perceived provocations. The situation in Jaisalmer is being closely monitored, as authorities assess the full extent of the attack and ensure that all necessary precautions are in place.
Residents are advised to remain cautious and cooperate with the security forces as the investigation into the drone attack continues.
