A horrific incident unfolded in Jaipur’s congested Nahargarh area on Tuesday night when a speeding car, allegedly driven by a drunk man, ploughed through pedestrians and vehicles, killing two and injuring at least eight others. The driver, identified as Usman, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and driving at 70-80 kmph when the rampage occurred.
According to eyewitness accounts, the accident took place around 9 pm. Usman was driving a Hyundai Creta from MI Road toward the walled city, recklessly hitting everything in his path. CCTV footage captured the vehicle speeding uncontrollably, knocking down pedestrians and colliding with objects on the road.
One witness, Dipendra, recounted how the vehicle hit a girl and then crashed into his motorcycle near the Santoshi Mata Mandir. “I managed to jump off in time, but the car dragged my bike for almost 20 metres,” he said.
Amid the chaos, a brave biker pursued Usman and caught up with the car. Despite being dragged for a short distance, the man managed to steer the vehicle into a blockade, forcing it to a stop. Usman fled the scene on foot but was later detained by authorities.
Police teams from the Nahargarh police station quickly arrived at the scene and rushed the injured to nearby hospitals. Among those hurt was a three-year-old girl, BJP MLA Balmukund Acharya confirmed. He demanded that more police checkposts be set up in the area to prevent such tragedies.
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot called the incident “heart-wrenching” and urged authorities to invoke stringent legal action against the accused.
The police have taken Usman into custody and are investigating the incident further. The city continues to reel from the shock, with locals and leaders alike demanding stricter enforcement against drunk driving.
