In a significant escalation of hostilities, the Israeli military confirmed that a drone launched “from the east” resulted in the deaths of two soldiers in northern Israel on Friday. According to reports, the drone strike originated from Iraq and targeted a military base in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.
The military stated that while one unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was intercepted by the Israeli air force, the second drone successfully struck a military camp, leading to the fatalities of the two soldiers and injuries to 24 others. The attack occurred overnight, with the Israeli army radio revealing that two UAVs crossed into Israeli territory from Iraq.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of aggression, as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq group, which has ties to Iran, claimed responsibility for multiple drone strikes aimed at Israeli targets this week. They reported carrying out a series of attacks, including three separate strikes on different locations in the Golan Heights and Tiberias early Friday morning.
The drone strike comes amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, which erupted following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7. This conflict has seen increased involvement from Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen, further complicating an already volatile situation in the region.
