“India’s Cyber Future Needs Builders, Not Just Critics” A Conversation with Anirudh Balaji

Brandspot“India’s Cyber Future Needs Builders, Not Just Critics” A Conversation with Anirudh Balaji

At just 31, Anirudh Balaji has already carved a unique space for himself at the intersection of cybersecurity, media, institution building, youth empowerment, philanthropy, and national development.

Entrepreneur, media tycoon, cybersecurity leader, philanthropist, and ecosystem builder — Anirudh represents a new generation of Indian leadership that is ambitious, grounded, mission-driven, and deeply committed to giving back to society.

From beginning his entrepreneurial journey in 2018 to becoming the Executive Director of the National Cyber Security Research Council (NCSRC) — a judicially guided national body working towards strengthening India’s cyber ecosystem — his journey reflects a relentless commitment towards building meaningful impact.

Apart from leading multiple national cybersecurity initiatives, Anirudh also runs ventures across cybersecurity, media, and digital ecosystems, with a strong focus on creating opportunities for young Indians, empowering communities, and bringing out hidden talent amongst youngsters across the country.

Over the years, he has been instrumental in conducting major cybersecurity conferences and national initiatives across cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and beyond, bringing together policymakers, CISOs, industry leaders, law enforcement officials, educators, creators, and young innovators under one platform.

Recognised as one of the emerging young voices in India’s cyber and innovation landscape, Anirudh has been featured in Femina Emerging Leaders and honoured with the ET Excellence Award for his contributions to entrepreneurship, media, social impact, and leadership.

But beyond titles and accolades, what truly defines him is his larger vision:
building a safer, smarter, and stronger India through cybersecurity, media influence, youth empowerment, philanthropy, and digital resilience.

We sat down with him for an exclusive conversation.

Q: You entered entrepreneurship at a very young age. What pushed you towards this path?

Anirudh Balaji:
I’ve always believed India is filled with immense untapped talent and potential. But talent alone is never enough — people need opportunities, platforms, exposure, and the right ecosystem.

I started my entrepreneurial journey in 2018 because I didn’t want to wait for change to happen around me. I wanted to create ecosystems that genuinely help people grow.

Cybersecurity fascinated me because it directly impacts every citizen today — from students and startups to governments and national infrastructure. At the same time, media fascinated me because narratives shape society.

That’s why today, alongside cybersecurity initiatives, I’m also focused on building strong media and community platforms that can inspire, educate, and empower the next generation.

A very important part of my mission is bringing out talent amongst youngsters. There are brilliant young minds across India — even in smaller towns and cities — who simply need visibility, mentorship, guidance, and belief.

I also strongly believe success becomes meaningful only when you give back to society. Whether through mentorship, youth opportunities, awareness initiatives, or ecosystem building, I want my work to positively impact people beyond business alone.

Q: The work being done by the National Cyber Security Research Council has gained significant attention in recent years. What has your role been in this journey?

Anirudh Balaji:
The Council’s vision has always been much bigger than conferences or events. Under the guidance of our Director, Dr. E. Khalieraaj Naidu, and the leadership of our High-Level Committee, we’ve focused on building awareness, connecting stakeholders, and creating opportunities for young Indians in cybersecurity.

My role has largely been execution, outreach, media positioning, and ecosystem building.

We’ve organised large-scale cybersecurity conferences across India, bringing together leaders from government, law enforcement, academia, and industry. These are not just networking platforms — they are spaces where serious conversations about India’s digital future take place.

One area very close to my heart has been youth development. Through internships, mentorship initiatives, Hackathon X, and exposure opportunities, we’ve worked towards helping students gain real industry access and confidence.

I strongly believe India’s next cyber defenders, innovators, ethical hackers, creators, and entrepreneurs are sitting inside our classrooms today.

Q: One of the initiatives frequently associated with your name is “Hackathon X.” Tell us more about it.

Anirudh Balaji:
Hackathon X is something I’m extremely passionate about because it represents the future of India.

It’s a pan-India initiative created to identify, nurture, and encourage young cybersecurity talent. We wanted students from all parts of the country — not just metro cities — to feel like they belong in the national innovation conversation.

The initiative has seen tremendous participation and support, and through it, deserving students have received rewards, recognition, mentorship, exposure, and career opportunities.

But beyond the prizes, the real goal is confidence.

When a student from a small town realises they can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best minds in the country, that changes everything.

Q: You often speak about “nation building” while discussing cybersecurity. Why?

Anirudh Balaji:
Because cybersecurity today is directly linked to national progress.

Every sector — banking, healthcare, defence, education, governance — depends on digital infrastructure. If we fail to secure these systems, we put citizens and institutions at risk.

But nation building is not only about protecting systems. It’s also about creating responsible citizens, ethical innovators, strong media ecosystems, and opportunities for the next generation.

India has the talent to become a global cybersecurity powerhouse. What we need now is scale, collaboration, consistency, and platforms that genuinely empower people.

Q: You’ve received recognition from platforms like Femina Emerging Leaders and the ET Excellence Awards at a relatively young age. How do you view success?

Anirudh Balaji:
Awards are encouraging, and I’m grateful for them. But for me, success is impact.

If a student discovers confidence because of a platform we created… if a young entrepreneur gets visibility… if a creator receives an opportunity… if an institution becomes stronger because we brought the right people together — that matters more than titles.

I think leadership is ultimately about service.

Q: Finally — what keeps you going?

Anirudh Balaji:
India.

I genuinely believe this country is entering one of the most defining phases in its history. There’s incredible energy, ambition, creativity, and talent amongst young Indians today.

If people like us can contribute even a small part towards building stronger systems, safer digital spaces, meaningful media platforms, and better opportunities for youngsters — then that’s a life worth dedicating ourselves to.

This is only the beginning.
