Chandra Arya, Indian-Origin MP, Announces Bid for Canadian Prime Minister Following Trudeau’s Resignation

Chandra Arya, an Indian-origin Member of Parliament (MP) from Nepean, has declared his intention to run for the position of Prime Minister of Canada following Justin Trudeau’s resignation. Arya, a member of the Liberal Party, made the announcement just four days after Trudeau’s surprise decision to step down amid internal discord within the party.

In a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), Arya explained his vision for a “smaller, more efficient” government that would address some of Canada’s most pressing challenges, including affordability issues, a struggling middle class, and a weakening economy. He emphasized that Canada is currently facing a “perfect storm” of problems and that the country deserves strong leadership that isn’t afraid to make bold decisions.

Arya expressed his readiness to take on the responsibility, stating, “I am stepping forward to take on this responsibility and lead Canada as its next Prime Minister. Bold political decisions are not optional—they are necessary.” He pledged to rebuild Canada’s economy, restore hope, create equal opportunities for all Canadians, and ensure prosperity for future generations.

To gather support for his campaign, Arya launched a website where he shared his full statement and his policy stance on several important issues, promising to update it with new proposals and political ideas. Arya has also been an outspoken supporter of the Hindu community in Canada and has raised concerns about the growing influence of Khalistani extremism in the country.

Who is Chandra Arya?

Chandra Arya is an experienced politician and engineer who has represented Nepean in Canada’s House of Commons since 2015. A proud member of the Liberal Party, Arya has won three consecutive elections in Nepean and has a deep commitment to strengthening the Canadian middle class. Born in Karnataka, India, Arya hails from Dwaralu village in Tumakuru district, about 70 km from Bengaluru.

Arya’s cultural pride was evident when he made history in 2022 by speaking in Kannada, his mother tongue, in the Canadian Parliament. The speech marked the first time Kannada had been spoken in any parliament outside of India. Arya took pride in representing his roots and said, “A person from the country of India in Karnataka, Tumakuru district, Shira taluka, Dwaralu village has been elected to the parliament of Canada and speaking in Kannada is a matter of pride for 5 crore Kannadigas.”

Before entering politics, Arya had a long career in engineering, business, and the tech sector. He moved to Canada over two decades ago with his wife, Sangeetha, and son, Sid. Initially starting as an engineer, Arya transitioned into roles such as an investment advisor and executive at a defense firm. He later ventured into entrepreneurship, running a manufacturing firm. His business experience and understanding of Canada’s middle class motivated him to enter politics, where he has since made significant contributions, including serving as the Chair of the Indo-Canada Ottawa Business Chamber and founding the Federation of Canadian Brazilian Businesses.

In his personal life, Arya resides in Nepean with his wife and son. His son, Sid, is a Chartered Accountant, and his wife, Sangeetha, previously worked at the Ottawa Catholic School Board.

With his combination of business acumen, political experience, and commitment to his community, Chandra Arya is poised to become a key contender for the leadership of Canada as he seeks to lead the country in a time of uncertainty.
