India Seeks Strong Ties with Pakistan, But Terrorism Must End First: S. Jaishankar in Lok Sabha

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told the Lok Sabha on Thursday that India is open to establishing good relations with Pakistan, similar to its ties with other neighboring countries. However, he emphasized that such relations must be free from terrorism. Jaishankar’s remarks came in response to a query about improving India-Pakistan relations during Question Hour.

“We have made it very clear that it is for the Pakistani side to show that they are changing the behavior of the past. If they don’t, there will be implications for the relationship and for them. The ball is very much in Pakistan’s court,” Jaishankar said.

Jaishankar also addressed the disruptions in trade and commerce between India and Pakistan, stating that these issues were the result of decisions taken by Pakistan’s government in 2019. He reiterated that India had taken the initiative to improve trade relations, maintaining a neutral stance on the matter, while stressing that it was Pakistan’s responsibility to act for progress in bilateral ties.

The minister’s comments come in the wake of longstanding tensions between the two countries, largely driven by security concerns, including cross-border terrorism. India has repeatedly raised concerns about Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorist activities aimed at destabilizing India.

Jaishankar also responded to questions raised by Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi regarding issues with India’s neighbors. Regarding Nepal, which allegedly printed maps with disputed Indian territories on its currency, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s position on its borders, stating that India would not alter its stance due to such actions by neighboring countries.

On the matter of drug trafficking from Myanmar, Jaishankar acknowledged the challenges posed by the unstable situation in the country. He revealed that India was reviewing its open-border policy with Myanmar in response to the issue but assured that the government remains sensitive to the concerns of border communities.

In response to Owaisi’s inquiry about India’s commitment to Bangladesh, Jaishankar highlighted India’s substantial contribution to development projects in the neighboring country. He expressed hope that with the new leadership in Bangladesh, both countries would work towards a mutually beneficial and stable relationship.

Jaishankar also spoke on the protection of Hindus and temples in Bangladesh, indicating that India is committed to ensuring the safety of its citizens and communities in the region.

India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, which aims to strengthen ties with neighboring countries through development assistance and collaboration, remains a key focus of India’s foreign relations, with the exception of Pakistan and China, according to Jaishankar.

As tensions continue to shape India’s foreign policy, Jaishankar’s comments underline the complexities of regional diplomacy, with terrorism, border disputes, and cross-border trade all playing significant roles in shaping relations with Pakistan and other neighbors.
