Residents Resort to Malls and Gyms Amidst Bengaluru's Severe Water Crisis

As Bengaluru grapples with an acute water shortage, a resident has brought attention to the dire situation by revealing that individuals are resorting to visiting malls for restroom facilities and gyms for bathing purposes. The resident, claiming to reside in a flat in Prestige Falcon City, highlighted the challenges faced due to the absence of a regular water supply, which has persisted for a month.

In a post on the social media platform Reddit, the resident described the distressing scenario, noting that many tenants have either vacated the premises or relocated to temporary accommodations. The lack of water supply has led to unsanitary conditions, with the stench of unflushed human waste permeating the environment. The resident lamented that it has become a common sight to witness a queue of residents heading to nearby malls, such as the Forum Mall, to fulfill their basic sanitary needs. Additionally, some individuals are resorting to gyms equipped with bathing facilities, carrying clothes and towels for this purpose.

Expressing concern over the situation, the resident cautioned prospective homebuyers against investing in properties reliant on tanker water in the city, highlighting the challenges posed by the ongoing water crisis.

The water scarcity in Bengaluru has reached alarming levels, with the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) taking strict measures to conserve water resources. An order issued by the BWSSB prohibits the use of drinking water for non-essential activities such as washing vehicles, gardening, construction, and entertainment purposes like water fountains. Violation of this order will result in a fine of ₹5,000, with additional penalties for subsequent violations.

Meanwhile, amidst the water crisis, concerns have been raised regarding the exploitation of the situation by vested interests, who are allegedly charging exorbitant rates for supplying water-laden tankers.
