Bengaluru saw moderate rainfall and cloudy skies on Thursday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, and surrounding districts until December 13. The showers are a part of a broader weather pattern caused by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is bringing heavy rainfall to coastal regions and moderate showers to southern Karnataka.
The IMD forecasts that districts such as Chitradurga, Kolar, Ramanagara, Mysuru, Tumakuru, and Chamarajanagar will experience similar weather conditions, while Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are expected to face heavy rainfall until December 14. The low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is influencing this weather, causing thunderstorms and lightning in Bengaluru, along with dense fog in parts of North Interior Karnataka.
The city’s temperature is expected to remain between 18°C and 25°C, with humidity levels rising to 86%, higher than the previous day’s readings. Winds blowing at 16 km/h from the northeast, combined with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 76, indicate moderate air quality.
Bengaluru’s weather on Thursday was marked by intermittent thunderstorms and lightning, with the sun rising at 6:33 AM and setting at 5:55 PM. The IMD has also warned of heavy rain and thunderstorms in certain southern districts, urging residents to remain cautious. The rainfall is linked to the depression in the Bay of Bengal, which has brought cooler temperatures and relief from the usual warm weather to the city. While Bengaluru experiences moderate rain, coastal Karnataka is experiencing heavier rainfall due to Cyclone Fengal, which has intensified the downpours along the coast.
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has also issued warnings of potential flooding and road disruptions in areas prone to heavy rain. The IMD has advised residents to stay updated on weather conditions and take necessary precautions.
