IMD Issues Red Alert for Several States Amidst Heavy Rainfall Predictions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several regions across India, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall due to active monsoon conditions. The alert encompasses East Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and Central Maharashtra.

According to Dr. Naresh Kumar, an IMD scientist, a deep depression in North East Madhya Pradesh and a low-pressure area in Southwest Rajasthan are contributing to the intense weather. “Monsoon is in its active phase,” Kumar stated. “We expect extremely heavy rainfall in the aforementioned regions.”

In addition to the red alert, an orange alert has been issued for parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, where conditions are also expected to be severe. The IMD’s latest bulletin predicts widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan over the next seven days.

The IMD has forecasted scattered to fairly widespread rainfall for Uttar Pradesh and isolated to scattered rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi. However, no significant rainfall is expected in Delhi-NCR in the next two days.

For the week ahead, the IMD predicts widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms over Konkan, Goa, and Gujarat. Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is expected over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Saurashtra, and Kutch.

In the South Peninsular region, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and Coastal Karnataka will likely experience fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, interior Karnataka, and Rayalaseema can expect isolated to scattered rainfall.

The monsoon trough is currently positioned at mean sea level, passing through Bikaner, Jaipur, Satna, the center of depression over north Jharkhand, Bankura, Canning, and moving southeast towards the northeast Bay of Bengal.
