The India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded the alarm on a brewing cyclonic storm, ‘Michaung,’ set to take shape over the Bay of Bengal. A low-pressure area that emerged over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea has transitioned into a well-marked low-pressure area, now poised to escalate into a Depression by November 30 and likely evolve into Cyclone ‘Michaung’ within the next 48 hours.
IMD’s projections outline a west-northwest trajectory for the system’s movement, signaling its gradual intensification over the southeast Bay of Bengal. The impending weather disturbance is anticipated to bring light to heavy rainfall across the Nicobar and Andaman Islands from November 29 to December 1.
The forecasted impact includes strong winds expected over specific regions. Winds of 25-35 kmph gusting to 45 kmph are forecasted for the South Andaman Sea and adjacent Andaman & Nicobar Islands on November 29. Squally weather with wind speeds ranging from 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is projected for the southeast Bay of Bengal on November 30, surging to 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph on December 1 and potentially escalating to gale force winds of 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph by December 2.
Similar weather patterns are predicted for other areas of the Bay of Bengal. Fishermen have received cautionary advisories, urging them to avoid venturing into identified regions from specific dates to ensure their safety.
Additionally, the Odisha government has placed seven coastal districts on high alert in anticipation of the brewing cyclonic storm. Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrata Sahoo’s directive to the district collectors highlights the potential intensification of the low-pressure area into a depression and further into a cyclonic storm.
Beyond the Bay of Bengal, IMD’s weather predictions outline rainfall expectations for various regions across India. From Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad to Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Northwest India, West and East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and Kerala & Mahe, varying degrees of rainfall and thunderstorm activity are forecasted over the coming days.
The article highlights the criticality of IMD’s alert and the precautionary measures recommended for coastal communities, emphasizing safety measures for fishermen and the potential impact on various regions due to the developing cyclonic storm ‘Michaung.’
