Roof Partially Collapses at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Delhi, Injuring Two

In a startling incident, the roof of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Delhi partially collapsed on Monday night, resulting in injuries to two individuals who were trapped in the debris. This incident comes on the heels of a recent roof collapse at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport, underscoring growing concerns over infrastructure safety in the capital.

According to the Delhi Police, the collapse occurred on July 1, when a temporary shed within the Hyatt Regency Hotel compound gave way. The injured individuals were promptly rescued and rushed to Fortis Hospital for medical treatment. Fortunately, their injuries were reported as minor.

The cause of the collapse is currently under investigation by Delhi Police, focusing on factors that led to the structural failure. This incident has raised significant alarms among residents and authorities alike, especially in light of the recent roof collapse at Delhi airport’s Terminal 1, which claimed one life and disrupted air travel operations.

Last week’s incident at Delhi airport, attributed primarily to heavy rainfall, resulted in the closure of the main domestic terminal, Terminal 1, for an extended period. The fallout included numerous flight cancellations and delays, affecting thousands of passengers. Authorities have since established a technical committee, including experts from IIT Delhi, to investigate the root cause and recommend necessary safety measures.

The GMR Group-led consortium, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which manages the airport, has indicated that the technical evaluation of Terminal 1’s infrastructure is ongoing and could take up to a month to complete. This assessment will determine the feasibility of resuming operations at the terminal.

Concerns over infrastructure safety have been heightened in Delhi, where structural integrity is being closely scrutinized across public and private sectors. The incidents at both the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Delhi airport underscore the urgent need for robust safety protocols and preventive maintenance practices to safeguard public spaces and ensure the well-being of residents and visitors alike.
