Assam CM's Warning: Marry Now or Face Jail After Uniform Civil Code, Himanta Sarma Tells AIUDF Chief

In a provocative statement ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a warning to AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, stating that if Ajmal intends to marry again, he should do so before the polls or risk arrest. Sarma’s remarks come in the context of the impending implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam post-elections, making polygamy illegal.

The exchange stemmed from a comment made by Badruddin Ajmal, who is contesting from the Dhubri constituency and had stated that despite his opponents’ claims of age catching up, he still possessed the strength to remarry. Responding to Ajmal’s remark, Sarma asserted at a rally that Ajmal should marry before the UCC comes into effect, or else he would face legal consequences.

“A Uniform Civil Code refers to a common set of laws that are applicable to all Indian citizens and are not based on religion in dealing with marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, among other personal matters,” the news report explained.

Sarma’s government has been vocal about its intent to introduce legislation on a Uniform Civil Code, a stance reinforced by the recent passage of a UCC bill in Uttarakhand. Assam is set to vote in the Lok Sabha polls across three phases, with results scheduled for June 4.
