Heavy Overnight Rain Causes Devastating Landslides and Waterlogging in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is grappling with severe weather-related disasters following heavy overnight rain that has caused significant damage across the state. Reports indicate that the rainfall has led to house collapses, widespread flooding, and rising water levels in several rivers.

In the wake of the torrential downpour, at least 10 people have been confirmed dead in Kedarnath, while four individuals are reported missing in rain-affected areas such as Dehradun, Haldwani, and Chamoli. The incessant rain has also resulted in severe waterlogging, with streets in Dehradun submerged and homes inundated.

Roads in various parts of Dehradun, including Haridwar, Bhupatwala, Naya Haridwar, Kankhal, and Jwalapur, have been left heavily waterlogged, with rainwater breaching the Kankhal police station. The flooding has caused significant disruptions and damage, including the washing away of a 20-25 meter footpath near Bhimbali Chowki in Kedarnath.

In response to the crisis, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with local administrative personnel, have been deployed to the affected regions. Disaster Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman reported that 200 stranded passengers on the Kedarnath route have been relocated to safety. Pilgrims stranded along the trek route are being evacuated via an emergency helipad.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has urged pilgrims to postpone their journey to Kedarnath until conditions improve and has put fresh registrations for the Chardham yatra on hold. This measure aims to prevent additional casualties and ensure safety as efforts continue to restore normalcy.
