Gujarat Family Holds Burial Ceremony for Beloved "Lucky" Car, Draws 1,500 Attendees

In an unusual event that has captured attention across Gujarat, a family in Amreli district held a grand burial ceremony for their 12-year-old Wagon R, a vehicle they considered their “lucky” charm. The car’s final farewell, complete with traditional Hindu rituals, took place on Thursday at the Polara family’s farm in Padarshinga village, Lathi taluka, and drew a gathering of around 1,500 people, including local seers, spiritual leaders, and other well-wishers.

Sanjay Polara, a farmer and construction business owner from Surat, led the ceremony alongside his family members. To honor the car, they covered it with a green cloth, adorned it with flowers and garlands, and performed a puja. Rose petals were showered on the car as priests chanted mantras, and a slope and 15-foot-deep pit were prepared for its “samadhi.” The ceremony concluded with an excavator pouring clay over the car to complete the burial.

In a statement, Polara explained his unique decision: “I bought this car nearly 12 years ago, and it brought prosperity to my family. Not only did my business flourish, but we also gained respect and fortune. This car was more than a vehicle; it was a symbol of good fortune.” Polara spent nearly ₹4 lakh on the event, viewing it as an investment in preserving a part of the family’s legacy. He plans to plant a tree at the burial site, intending for it to serve as a living memorial for future generations.

The burial event included a traditional feast, and videos of the proceedings have since gone viral on social media, sparking both admiration and curiosity. Polara’s heartfelt tribute reflects a blend of spirituality and personal belief, rooted in the idea that certain objects bring not only memories but also blessings.
