Government Approves PM Surya Ghar Scheme: 1 Crore Families to Receive Free Solar Power

In a significant move aimed at promoting renewable energy adoption across households, the Indian government has given the green light to the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a scheme set to provide free electricity up to 300 units per month to one crore families through the installation of rooftop solar systems. This initiative, part of the government’s ongoing commitment to bolstering renewable energy infrastructure, is poised to revolutionize access to clean energy while fostering economic empowerment and environmental sustainability.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur announced the approval of the scheme during a press briefing, highlighting its transformative potential in both household economics and the renewable energy sector. With an estimated outlay of ₹75,021 crore, the scheme promises to offer financial assistance of up to ₹78,000 to eligible families for the installation of rooftop solar systems, facilitating their transition towards sustainable energy sources.

Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, central financial assistance (CFA) will be extended to residential rooftop solar installations, covering 60% of the system cost for 2 kilowatt (kW) systems and 40% of the additional cost for systems ranging from 2 to 3 kilowatts. This subsidy, capped at 3 kW, aims to make solar energy adoption financially feasible for households across the country.

The scheme’s benefits extend beyond financial savings, with households expected to not only reduce their electricity bills but also generate additional income by selling surplus power to distribution companies (discoms). By harnessing solar energy, a 3 kW system can generate over 300 units of electricity per month on average, offering substantial economic advantages to participating families.

To facilitate seamless implementation, families can apply for subsidies through the National Portal and select certified vendors for the installation of rooftop solar systems. Collateral-free, low-interest loans will also be made available for system installation, further easing the financial burden on households.

Additionally, the scheme is projected to contribute significantly to India’s efforts in reducing carbon emissions, with an estimated 30 gigawatts of solar capacity expected to be added through residential rooftop systems. Over the 25-year lifespan of these systems, a reduction of 720 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions is anticipated, marking a substantial stride towards environmental sustainability.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had initially hinted at the scheme’s inception in January, following the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, underscoring the government’s commitment to promoting clean energy initiatives.
