In the early hours of Sunday morning, a collision between two goods trains near Sirhind railway station resulted in injuries to two loco pilots. The incident occurred around 4 am in the Madhopur area when a moving goods train collided with a parked one.
The injured loco pilots, Vikas Kumar and Himanshu Kumar, have been admitted to Sri Fatehgarh Sahib Civil Hospital. According to officials, no casualties have been reported, but the movement of trains has been significantly affected. Railway officials have initiated diversions for trains from Rajpura, Patiala, and Dhuri as restoration work is currently underway.
This accident adds to a series of recent railway mishaps across the country. Earlier this week, a derailment at Palghar railway station involved six goods wagons and a brake and guard van. This incident, potentially caused by a rail fracture, occurred around 5 pm when a goods train carrying steel coils to Mumbai derailed at the crossing point of the main rail line and the loop line.
An eyewitness reported that the fully loaded goods train was moving at a moderate speed when the wagons derailed. The derailment caused significant damage, including broken wheels and couplings, and uprooted an Over Head Equipment (OHE) pole. As a result, railway traffic between Surat and Mumbai faced major disruptions.
In another incident, four wagons of a goods train derailed near Kantabanji station in the Sambalpur Division of East Coast Railway (ECoR), Odisha, on Friday night. The derailment occurred around 10:50 pm, causing disruption of train movement on both tracks. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The series of accidents highlights the urgent need for enhanced railway safety measures and infrastructure maintenance to prevent further mishaps and ensure the safety of railway personnel and passengers.
