Fresh violence erupted in the Kadangband area of Imphal West district, Manipur, as militants launched a coordinated attack in the early hours of Wednesday. The incident, which took place around 1 am, saw militants firing rounds from sophisticated firearms and throwing bombs at the low-lying area. The militants, believed to be from the hill positions in Kangpokpi district, targeted the vulnerable village as part of ongoing tensions in the region.
According to local police, the militants launched their assault with precision, but villagers, including volunteers deployed in the area, swiftly returned fire in an attempt to defend themselves. Fortunately, no injuries were reported following the exchange of fire. The attack, however, caused panic among the local population, forcing several villagers residing in Kutcha homes to flee to safer areas for their safety.
Authorities acted promptly, with additional security forces being dispatched to the Kadangband area to control the situation and prevent further escalation. The region has been on high alert due to a series of militant attacks since the outbreak of violence in Manipur in May 2023.
Kadangband, which has been a frequent target of militant activity, witnessed a similar attack earlier this year, further heightening the concerns of residents who have already been grappling with the ongoing unrest. The recent attack, although not causing fatalities, has reignited fears of the escalating violence in the region.
As the situation continues to unfold, authorities are closely monitoring the security dynamics, and efforts are being made to ensure the safety of the residents who have been displaced.
