Former Karnataka CM Accuses Government of Using Hijab Issue to Conceal Failures

The hijab controversy in Karnataka has become a battleground for political accusations, with former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai accusing the current CM, Siddaramaiah, of exploiting the issue to divert attention from the government’s failures.

In a press conference, Bommai addressed the controversy, asserting that the hijab wasn’t banned across the state but was restricted only in institutions with specific dress codes. He clarified that Muslim women retain the right to wear the hijab everywhere else, dismissing claims of a ban. “When there’s no ban on hijab, why discuss lifting it?” Bommai questioned.

Highlighting the political dimension, Bommai criticized Siddaramaiah’s recent declaration of lifting the supposed hijab ban imposed by the previous BJP government. He condemned the move as a ploy for political mileage, especially since the matter remains sub judice in the Supreme Court.

Responding to Siddaramaiah’s announcement, the current Chief Minister acknowledged the consideration of rescinding the hijab ban but clarified that no definitive decision had been made yet. He emphasized the need to refrain from politicizing personal choices in attire or diet.

However, Bommai countered these statements, alleging that the government aimed to mask its failures by magnifying the hijab issue. He accused the ruling party of diverting attention from issues like drought and inadequate sanitation facilities by sensationalizing controversies.

Moreover, Bommai pointed out the global attention the hijab controversy has garnered, citing movements in Iran and Iraq where women have campaigned for freedom against mandatory hijab laws. He questioned the necessity of Siddaramaiah’s statement while the matter rested with the Supreme Court, cautioning against unnecessary interference.

As the political discourse escalates around the hijab issue in Karnataka, the debate has shifted beyond state boundaries, drawing attention at an international level. Amidst these developments, both political parties continue to trade allegations, each accusing the other of manipulating the situation for their own agenda.
