In a tragic incident, five contract workers lost their lives due to suffocation while cleaning a water tank at an under-construction building in Mumbai’s Nagpada area on Sunday.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the incident took place around 12:30 pm at the Bismillah Space building on Dimtimkar Road. The workers reportedly lost consciousness inside the water tank while carrying out cleaning work.
Upon being alerted, the fire brigade rushed to the scene and rescued the five men. However, they were declared “brought dead” upon arrival at the state-run JJ Hospital.
A fire official told PTI that the workers entered the tank to clean it but suffocated inside. Other laborers at the site noticed the situation and immediately called for help.
Officials from the BMC and local police have arrived at the scene, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident and any possible negligence.
This tragic event highlights the dangers faced by laborers working in hazardous conditions, raising concerns about workplace safety measures and necessary precautions in such high-risk tasks.
