In a significant development following a shooting incident in Amritsar, police have arrested five individuals, including the father of the victim’s first wife. The arrest comes a day after Sukhchain Singh, an NRI recently returned from the US, was targeted in a violent attack at his home.
The shooting occurred early Saturday morning when Sukhchain Singh was leaving his house in Daburji village for a walk. The assailants forcibly entered his residence and fired three shots at him. Two bullets struck Singh, one in the head and the other near his chest. Fortunately, Singh is reported to be out of danger, according to police sources.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Ranjit Singh Dhillon revealed that the attack was orchestrated by the family of Singh’s first wife, who had committed suicide in December 2022. The family reportedly harbored a deep grudge against Singh. The two assailants, identified as Sukhwinder alias Sukha and Gurkirat Singh alias Guri, were allegedly hired for the attack.
The arrested individuals include:
- Sarwan Singh, the father of Singh’s first wife from Bains village, Hoshiarpur.
- Jagjit Singh and Chamkaur Singh from Tarn Taran, who allegedly assisted the assailants before the crime.
- Digambar Attri, a hotel owner, and Abhilash Bhaskar, a hotel manager, who are accused of providing accommodation to the assailants without verifying their identities.
The assailants had stayed at Attri’s hotel before and after the shooting. In addition to these arrests, police have also filed charges against Sukhwinder Singh, Kuljinder Kaur, and her husband Jasvir Singh. Sukhwinder Singh and Kuljinder Kaur are the brother and sister of Singh’s first wife, respectively.
Footage from CCTV cameras inside Singh’s home captured the distressing moments when his wife, mother, and children pleaded with the assailants to spare him.
