The Israeli envoy to India, Naor Gilon, announced on Tuesday that the first batch of over 60 Indian construction workers is set to depart for Israel. This move marks the beginning of a government-to-government agreement between the two nations, although there has been no official announcement yet regarding the specifics of this agreement.
Gilon expressed optimism about the workers becoming ‘ambassadors’ of the strong people-to-people relations shared between India and Israel. He commended India’s National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) for its role in facilitating this initiative.
The envoy’s statement comes amidst reports of the Israeli construction industry’s interest in recruiting up to 100,000 Indian workers to replace Palestinian workers following the Israel-Hamas conflict. However, the details and formalization of such plans remain to be officially confirmed.
The safety and security of Indian citizens in Israel have gained prominence, especially after a recent incident involving the death of an Indian national in a missile attack reportedly launched by Hezbollah. The Indian government has emphasized its focus on ensuring the well-being of its citizens in the region.
India already has a significant presence in Israel with over 18,000 caregivers and other professionals. The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, reiterated the government’s commitment to the safety of Indian nationals in Israel.
