Priyanka Gandhi Receives Election Commission Notice for '₹21' Remark Targeted at PM Modi

In a significant development, the Election Commission has issued a show-cause notice to senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over a potential violation of the poll code during her recent speech in Dausa, Rajasthan. The notice calls for Priyanka Gandhi to respond by 5 pm on October 30, addressing concerns raised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The controversy stems from Priyanka Gandhi’s statement during a public meeting in Dausa on October 20. She mentioned having seen on TV that Prime Minister Narendra Modi donated an envelope at a temple, but when it was opened, it contained only ₹21. The BJP, in its representation to the Election Commission of India, accused Priyanka Gandhi of invoking the Prime Minister’s personal religious devotion to make false claims during her election campaign.

Law Minister Arjun Meghwal, on behalf of the BJP, stated, “We met members of the Election Commission regarding a statement by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on October 20 that violated the Model Code of Conduct and RP Act. We want to ask ECI if Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is above the Model Code of Conduct. We demand ECI to take action against her.”

The show-cause notice issued by the Election Commission invoked a provision of the poll code that emphasizes refraining from criticism of aspects of private life not connected with the public activities of leaders or workers of other parties. The Model Code of Conduct has come into effect with the announcement of poll dates.

This development has added a new layer of intrigue to the ongoing political discourse, highlighting the sensitivity of personal remarks and religious references during election campaigns. As the situation unfolds, both Priyanka Gandhi and the Election Commission’s response will be closely monitored in the run-up to the elections.
