In a significant development, the Election Commission (EC) has appointed five new Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) in Punjab, signaling a proactive approach ahead of crucial elections. This move comes as part of the EC’s strategy to ensure impartiality and efficiency in maintaining law and order during the electoral process.
According to state Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C, the following appointments have been made:
- Deepak Pareek – SSP of Bathinda
- Ankur Gupta – SSP of Jalandhar Rural
- Simrat Kaur – SSP of Malerkotla
- Suhail Qasim Mir – SSP of Pathankot
- Pragya Jain – SSP of Fazilka
These appointments follow the transfer of eight SPs/SSPs and five District Magistrates (DMs) across Punjab, Odisha, Gujarat, and West Bengal. The EC’s decision reflects its firm stance against the placement of non-cadre officers in crucial leadership positions, aiming for a transparent and effective administration during the election period.
Notably, one of the transferred officers, SSP Bathinda Harnanbir Singh Gill, was reassigned as a “pre-emptive measure” by the EC. This decision was influenced by his familial association as the brother of Congress MP from Khadoor Sahib, Jasbir Singh Gill, underlining the EC’s commitment to avoiding any potential conflicts of interest or bias.
The EC’s proactive approach in appointing new SSPs underscores its dedication to upholding electoral integrity and ensuring a fair and secure environment for voters, candidates, and stakeholders. These strategic personnel changes are expected to bolster confidence in the electoral process and contribute to a smooth and orderly conduct of elections in Punjab.
The EC’s stance on non-cadre officers and its meticulous approach to personnel appointments demonstrate its commitment to maintaining a level playing field and safeguarding the democratic principles underlying the electoral process.
