The Election Commission of India (ECI) has advised West Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose against touring Cooch Behar on April 18 and 19 due to the silence period for the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls. This period, which begins on Wednesday evening, restricts campaigning activities under Section 126 of the Representation of People Act.

According to sources within the EC, the decision was made to avoid diversion of resources as the district administration and police force will be fully occupied with election management during this time. The EC emphasized that no local program can be organized for the governor on April 19, given its status as a poll day.

The EC’s instructions also extend to all high-profile individuals, campaigners, and political workers who are not voters within the area. They must exit the election area once the silence period begins to ensure a free and fair electoral process.

The advisory from the Election Commission underscores the importance of maintaining election protocols and ensuring a level playing field for all candidates during the crucial phases of the electoral process.
