Delhi's Temperature to Dip as Western Disturbance Brings Rain: IMD

The maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to drop by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the coming days due to an approaching Western Disturbance, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. The disturbance is set to bring rainfall across North India, leading to cooler temperatures in the capital.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 10.7°C on Monday morning, which is one degree below the seasonal average. The city’s air quality index (AQI) was measured at a ‘moderate’ 169.

Western Disturbance to Bring Rain, Drop in Temperature

IMD scientist Dr. Soma Sen Roy stated that the impact of the Western Disturbance will increase rainfall activity over the Western Himalayan region. “We have issued heavy rainfall warnings for the region from February 26-28. Rainfall is expected to increase on February 27, and when it does, we will issue an ‘orange’ alert for Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh,” she said.

The IMD also forecasted rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, and northern Rajasthan on February 27. Additionally, thunderstorms are likely to intensify in the hilly regions by February 28.

“In the plains, the maximum temperature will start falling after two days. In Delhi, temperatures will initially rise but will drop by 2-3 degrees once clouds start forming and drizzle occurs,” Dr. Roy explained.

Weather Forecast for Other Regions

Apart from North India, the IMD has predicted rainfall in northeastern states due to cyclonic circulation in the lower tropospheric levels. Isolated to scattered light-to-moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is expected in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on February 24, while Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may experience similar weather conditions on February 24 and 25.

Hailstorm activity is also likely at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh and northeast Assam on February 24.

Meanwhile, southern states including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to witness scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning from February 27 to March 1. Heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala and Mahe on February 28 and March 1.

Delhi’s Forecast

For Monday, Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to reach 27°C, while the minimum will hover around 11°C. However, as the Western Disturbance takes effect, temperatures are likely to drop in the coming days.
