In a tragic incident, ten wagons of a goods train derailed near Sarai Rohilla Railway station in Delhi’s Zakhira area, resulting in the death of a 70-year-old rag-picker named Rafiq. The mishap occurred on Saturday morning as the train was passing under the Zakhira flyover.
Rafiq’s body was found under one of the derailed bogies. He was working under a contractor hired by the railways, accompanied by three other workers who fortunately escaped unharmed. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) KPS Malhotra stated that there is no suspicion of sabotage or foul play in the derailment, emphasizing that initial investigations indicate no signs of mischief.
“Iron sheet rolls were loaded in the goods train, which was en route from Mumbai to Chandigarh,” revealed a railway official. Rescue operations were promptly initiated, with teams from the railway police and fire brigade swiftly arriving at the scene. Additionally, a mobile crime team and forensic experts have been called in to inspect the site thoroughly.
Despite the unfortunate incident, authorities assured the public that law and order remain normal in the area. Efforts are underway to resume train operations over the affected track following standard railway procedures. However, the derailment caused panic among residents living alongside the tracks, as depicted in a video clip capturing the chaotic scene.
The derailment underscores the importance of ensuring the safety and integrity of railway infrastructure. As investigations continue, authorities are committed to uncovering the root cause of the incident and implementing measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
