Delhi Sizzles at 42°C; Dusty Winds and More Heat Expected This Week, Says IMD

Delhi is currently experiencing intense heat with temperatures soaring to 42.1 degrees Celsius on Sunday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This marks 2.1 degrees above the seasonal average, as the national capital battles a stretch of above-normal temperatures. The minimum temperature was recorded at 27.7 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has forecasted another harsh day on Monday, with the mercury expected to climb further to around 43 degrees Celsius. Alongside the heat, dusty winds are expected to blow across the region, reducing visibility and making conditions tougher for residents already coping with the sweltering weather. The minimum temperature on Monday is likely to hover near 28 degrees Celsius.

In addition to the heat, Delhi’s air quality remains a concern. As of Sunday evening, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 198, placing it in the “moderate” category but close to the “poor” threshold. The AQI scale ranges from “good” (0-50) to “severe” (401-500), indicating that pollution levels, while moderate, need close monitoring.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department also reported that May 2025 has been the wettest since 1901, with an average nationwide rainfall of 126.7 mm—106% above the Long Period Average of 61.4 mm. The early onset of the southwest monsoon contributed to continuous rainfall, especially across southern and eastern India.

While much of the country has witnessed significant rain, Delhi faces a contrasting scenario of heat and dust, highlighting the diverse climatic conditions across India this season.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and take precautions to protect themselves from the dusty winds and pollution.
