The Delhi Police have dismantled an international mobile smuggling racket, arresting a man who was allegedly attempting to transport 48 high-end stolen mobile phones to Bangladesh. The accused, identified as 24-year-old Abdush, was apprehended while trying to take the stolen phones—worth approximately ₹20 lakh—to West Bengal.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Aditya Gautam, the investigation revealed that organised gangs operate across Delhi-NCR, targeting commuters in metro stations, buses, and crowded markets. Once stolen, the mobile phones were swiftly smuggled out of the city, making it difficult for law enforcement to track them.
Accused Smuggled Over 800 Phones
Police said Abdush purchased the stolen devices for ₹2,000-3,000 each and transported them to West Bengal, where they were modified and later sold in Bangladesh for ₹8,000-10,000 per unit. Acting on a tip-off, police laid a trap near Salimgarh Bypass and intercepted Abdush with the stolen consignment of 48 high-end mobile phones.
During interrogation, Abdush admitted to getting involved in mobile phone smuggling in 2023 to make quick money. He had initially worked in the mobile scrap trade, where he came in contact with two key players in the racket, Sameer and Salim. Seeing the profit potential, he began purchasing stolen phones from them at low rates and smuggling them into Bangladesh via West Bengal.
The accused has confessed to smuggling over 800 stolen mobile phones from Delhi to West Bengal over the past year and a half.
Further Investigation Underway
The Cyber Cell is now working to identify and track Abdush’s associates, including Sameer and Salim, and dismantle the larger network involved in the illegal trade across Delhi, West Bengal, and Bangladesh. Investigators are also tracing the smuggling routes used by the syndicate to curb the illegal trade of stolen mobile devices.
